REDCHURCH GARDEN
It’s common knowledge that we live in a rather difficult time, in the midst of serious problems and challenges. Mankind is facing a crisis on all fronts: environmental, cultural, philosophical, religious and political amongst others. This project proposes a cardinal solution, not only to the problems considered by this competition, but also to the global problems of humanity, thereby setting itself an even more difficult task. The project proposes the construction of a huge park on the roofs of the district proposed by the competition. The buildings have varying numbers of floors and in order to avoid a large number of level differences it will be required to set a “plateau” over the roofs of the houses, in the intervals between the park and the co-existing buildings will be located all the necessary services: engineering, rainwater purifiers, technologies, power generation systems, supercomputing center etc. Existing buildings remain untouched and mothballed by the park from further attempts to demolish old buildings in order to construct new taller buildings and the rooftop addition. The street remains a street, a place for socializing, drinking coffee, having lunch or a snack. Creating such a large park will solve many problems, such as improving the environmental quality, air quality and reducing the amount of CO2 in the area. The park will become the habitat of many insects, birds and small mammals. Also, the park can at least partially contribute to such problems as food (which can be grown in the park) and water (using rainwater and moisture).Regarding the specific goals set by this competition, this idea does not deviate from them, but rather tries to solve them in the best way and implies an improvement in all of the above points. The implementation of this “crazy project” turns this place into a new cultural, environmental and tourist center of London. The new place will attract so much media attention that it will not require special advertising. Creative studios and high-end shops will want to open new branches. Tourists will rent apartments or rooms in a hotel just to have a new experience. This is a proposal to review everything, not just taking separate elements of the urban environment and solving them individually, but attempting to solve them globally, and aspiring to give a new life to everything: street, city and planet.
