Briefing

For boring logistical reasons and life contingencies, we (a couple in our late 30s) are about to move back into our 80 sqm lovebirds flat, but with two new family members: a toddler and a newborn!
This will hopefully be a temporary stay but, nonetheless, we want to make the place more pleasant-looking, functional, child-friendly and come up with a wiser use of space.
Our main goal is to have an extra room for the children to sleep and play in, possibly by splitting up the kitchen, but we are open to other suggestions.
Because we don’t plan to stay for long (but, hey, you never know), we have a very limited budget as we nee to save to buy a bigger place downtown. This means we are willing to embark in the minimum amount of wall moving necessary to come up with an extra room, but cannot consider re-planning the house from scratch. What we do need badly is a new mood to the flat, a set up in which children can move around smoothly and a twist in style that will help us forget that it's way 536eytoo small for 4 people.

About the flat
The apartment is on the last floor of a small two story building located in the hills of Turin. Although it doesn’t feel like it because you don’t have to watch your head to move around, it is an attic flat, with uneven ceiling heights. It now has a grim 70s look to it, mainly because of the terrible flooring, and really needs to be brightened up and re-thought in terms of style.
The flat catches quite a bit of sunlight because of numerous door windows (at least one per room).

General observations
Layout - It is mandatory for the kitchen and bathroom to remain where they are. Again, the less new walls go up and old walls go down, the better. Although, of course, there must be some moving around.

Flooring – We want to get rid of the ugly tiles and replace them with light colored (not yellowish) nuances of laminated wood panels (for living room, bedrooms and entrance). In the kitchen we want to cover up the existing tiles with vinyl tiles (not imitating wood, but some pleasant-looking patterns such as “cementine”). In the bathroom we also aim to use appropriate vinyl tiles to cover up the floor.

Walls – All walls are to be re-painted and we want to get rid of all that red and yellow paint. We need to rethink colors in the whole house (please note pantone examples of what we generally like).

Furniture – We are willing to buy new pieces of furniture to match a design we like, provided that they are low cost but not cheap looking.

Doors – We want to keep the doors we have but are willing to re-paint and/or decorate them to match a design we like.

Fixtures – The wooden fixtures are old but we want to keep them so we are willing to re-paint and/or decorate all of them to make them more pleasant looking.

Radiators – These cannot be moved around nor changed. They are old looking but can be painted to make them vintage looking.




Room by room

Living room – Presently this room still looks like a student lounge, with two desks, bookshelves, swivel chairs, etc.; all these items will need to go. Now it needs to look like a family sitting room with a sofa (we are keeping the one we have), a small size dining table, maybe a coffee table and, possibily, a foldable desk to work as a PC station when needed. A big plus would be a small versatile area for the kids to play on occasionally. Ideally we have imagined to turn the wall facing the sofa in a well-equipped wall with TV and plenty storage units, either with cubby holes, fitted boxes, in-built shelves, etc. We are looking for a solution to keep the room tidy and have practical slot to use daily to put away items related to the children. Kitchen – The wall equipped with the actual kitchen (stove, sink, dishwasher, etc.) must stay in place and we will keep the existing items (except the dining table which is now too large). We might consider adding some pieces if necessary (since it is a standard Ikea kitchen). We are looking to cover up the wall of tiles in the back of the kitchen with some pleasant patterns we can easily apply to the tiles. Also, if the extra room will originate from splitting up the kitchen, we will need a new entrance to the kitchen with or without a door. (Flooring: as mentioned before: appropriate vinyl tiles)

Master bedroom – The existing bedroom is quite bare (and we like to keep it this way). We intend to keep the double chest of drawers (Ikea Malm) but are bored by its yellowish color and are looking for solutions to paint it to make it look nicer. We are also going to keep the bed (Ikea Malm) but maybe looking to make it another color. (Flooring: as mentioned before: light colored nuances of laminated wooden panels)


Extra bedroom for children – This is a new sheet to work on so we are open to all suggestions. We already have a wooden crib and a small bed. This room has to be comfortable and safe, with a play mat area and Montessori bookshelves, maybe a small table, etc. (Flooring: as mentioned before: light colored nuances of laminated wooden panels or we are open to suggestions of a flooring appropiate for small children provided that it is easy to clean, hygienic and not toxic.


Bathroom – No major changes to be made here, although we might consider removing the tub and making the shower nicer. Also we need to keep the washing machine inside and have to find a pretty solution to hang the washing loads. The room would probably benefit from a handy piece of furniture. The tiles on the wall could be covered up or even painted with products meant specifically for the bathroom. (Flooring: as mentioned before: appropriate vinyl tiles)


Entrance/Hall – We could possibly think about removing the door that, at the moment, separates the living room from the rest of the flat. (Flooring: as mentioned before: light colored nuances of laminated wooden panels).

Walk-in closet/Storage – At present we have this closed storage space we have organized as a detached walk-in closet + storage space. We prefer to keep the idea of a walk-in closet but maybe organized in some other way. However, we will also consider proposals using that space differently (whilst still providing somehow space for clothes, ecc.). FYI: we also have two in-built wall cupboards: one between the bathroom and the kitchen and one between the living room and the bedroom). Your challange
Your mission impossible is to help us give our children a room and to guide us in finding some domestic comfort and relief whilst keeping in mind we cannot "waste" too much money on a flat we plan to leave soon.

DESCRIZIONE IN ITALIANO

Trasformare un piccolo nido d’amore per far spazio a due bimbi

Per una noiosa serie di motivi logistici e altre contingenze varie, ci troviamo (come coppia di trentenni in odor in “anta”) a dover tornare a vivere nel nostro attico di 80 metri quadri scarsi con due nuovi membri in famiglia: un vivace duenne e una neonata!
In teoria dovrebbe essere una residenza momentanea, in attesa di spostarci in un luogo più consono in città, ma, in ogni caso, abbiamo urgenza di rendere l’appartamento più gradevole e a misura di bambini, migliorandone la funzionalità e sfruttando meglio gli spazi.
Il nostro obiettivo primario è naturalmente ricavare una stanza in più in cui i bimbi possano dormire e giocare. Abbiamo immaginato questa potesse saltar fuori dalla divisione dell’ampia cucina, ma siamo aperti anche ad altre soluzioni.
Siccome non prevediamo di fermarci molto tempo (però mai dire mai), abbiamo allocato un budget molto limitato. Questo significa che siamo prepararti ad affrontare il numero minimo di opere murarie affinché venga fuori una stanza in più, ma non possiamo assolutamente considerare l’ipotesi di trasformare l’appartamento in toto. Quello di cui abbiamo invece un disperato bisogno è di trovare una nuova anima per l’appartamento, rinnovando gli spazi in modo che i bambini si possano muovere in sicurezza, ma anche dando una svolta di stile che aiuti a farci dimenticare quanto in effetti si stia stretti in 4!

A proposito dell’appartamento
L’appartamento è situato all’ultimo piano di una piccola palazzina a due piani immersa nel verde della collina torinese. È, a tutti gli effetti “mansardato”, con un tetto alla francese da cui sbucano i balconcini. Anche se non bisogna camminare sulle ginocchia in nessun punto della casa, i soffitti hanno altezze variabili e spioventi. Oggi sfoggia un cupo look anni Settanta, a causa soprattutto del terrificante pavimento originario e necessita una bella rinfrescata di stile.
Le numerose porte finestre (almeno una per stanza) lo rendono un appartamento parecchio luminoso.

Considerazioni generali
Layout – È fondamentale che la cucina e il bagno restino dove sono. Come anticipato, meno nuovi muri vanno su e meno muri esistenti vengono giù, meglio è per tutti. Tuttavia, ci rendiamo conto che un po’ di rivoluzionamento s’adda fà!

Pavimenti – Vogliamo finalmente liberarci di questo piastrellume agghiacciante e rimpiazzarlo con un parquet laminato dalle tinte chiare (ma non tendenti al giallo); questo vale per il salone, le stanze da letto e l’entrata. In cucina, invece, vorremmo coprire il pavimento attuale con un pavimento vinilico (non in stile parquet ma con piastrelle che imitino le “cementine”). Anche in bagno vorremmo coprire il pavimento con delle piastrelle viniliche appropriate per quella location.

Pareti – Tutte le pareti vanno ritinteggiate rimuovendo i rossi e i giallini seminati per la casa. Va proprio ripensata l’intera palette di colori delle pareti (in allegato trovate alcuni esempi e pantoni di quello che generalmente ci piace).

Mobili – Siamo favorevoli all’acquisto di alcuni pezzi di mobilio nuovi se questi si abbinano a un design che ci piace, a patto che siano low-cost ma non dozzinali.

Porte interne – Vogliamo tenere le porte esistenti ma siamo preparati a ridipingerle/laccarle e/o decorarle perché si intonino con un design di nostro gusto.

Serramenti – I serramenti di legno sono vetusti e anche un po’ imbarcati, ma miriamo a tenerli preferendo piuttosto ridipingerli/laccarli e/o decorarli perché si intonino con un design di nostro gusto.

Termosifoni – Sono i classici bisonti di ghisa che usavano una volta ma li vogliamo conservare e non possono cambiare posizione. Magari si potrebbe giocare con vernici e decorazioni per renderli un elemento di design.


Stanza per stanza

Salotto – Al momento questa stanza ha ancora il sapore degli appartamenti universitari, con due scrivanie, scaffali, sedie girevoli, ecc.; tutti elementi che faremo sparire. Adesso deve diventare il salotto di una giovane famiglia, con un sofà (terremo quello che abbiamo), un tavolo da pranzo di piccole dimensioni, magari un tavolino e, possibilmente, una specie di scrivania a scomparsa che, all’occorrenza, possa trasformarsi in postazione per lavorare al computer. Un grande bonus sarebbe poter anche incorporare un’area versatile in cui occasionalmente i bimbi possano intrattenersi. Idealmente abbiamo immaginato che la parete davanti al sofà diventasse una parete attrezzata in cui trovi posto la TV ma anche tutta una serie di nicchie e scaffali (in muratura o non) che possano essere usati come moduli per conservare scatole e far posto a oggetti vari. Stiamo cercando una soluzione che ci permetta di tenere in ordine la stanza facilmente, riponendo giornalmente le cose in modo semplice e veloce. (Pavimenti: come anticipato, parquet laminato su toni chiari).

Cucina – La parete attrezzata a cucina vera e propria (fuochi, lavello, lavastoviglie) deve rimanere in posizione e verranno mantenuti gli elementi esistenti, ad eccezione del tavolo che ormai è troppo grande. Però, siccome si tratta di una cucina Ikea standard, siamo disposti eventualmente ad aggiungere elementi. Intendiamo coprire la fascia di piastrelle dietro al lavandino con degli elementi decorativi che possano essere applicati facilmente sopra le piastrelle a muro. Inoltre, se la stanza in più verrà ricavata dimezzando la cucina, sarà necessario ovviamente creare una nuova entrata alla cucina (con o senza porta). Camera da letto principale – La camera da letto esistente è spoglia, ma intendiamo tenerla abbastanza vuota. Vogliamo conservare la doppia cassettiera (Ikea Malm) ma ci siamo stufati di questi colori paglierini e cerchiamo soluzioni per renderla più simpatica (magari dipingendola). Altro elemento che intendiamo conservare è il letto (anch’esso della mitica serie Ikea Malm) ma siamo aperti a valutare piccole opere decorative per “debanalizzarlo” un po’. Camera in più per i bambini – Questa è un foglio nuovo da pensare liberamente. Abbiamo già una culla di legno e un lettino. L’importante è che la stanza sia comoda e sicura. Ci piace l’approccio montessoriano nella disposizione e nella tipologia di mobili e vorremmo che fosse presente un angolino per mettere un tappeto gioco, degli elementi per tenere in ordine i giochi, magari un piccolo tavolino con sedie, ecc. (Pavimenti: come anticipato, parquet laminato su toni chiari OPPURE un’altra pavimentazione adatta a bambini a patto che sia morbida, sicura, facile da pulire, anti acaro (no moquette o simili), igienica e atossica).

Bagno – Qui non prevediamo grandi modifiche anche se possiamo prendere in considerazione l’ipotesi di rimuovere la vasca e migliorare l’esperienza della doccia. In questa stanza dobbiamo tenere la lavatrice e anche trovare una soluzione piacevole all’occhio per stendere il bucato. Potrebbe servire un furbo mobile da bagno che sia pratico. Le piastrelle a muro potrebbero essere coperte con quelle viniliche oppure dipinte con vernici apposite per i bagni. (Pavimenti: come anticipato, piastrelle viniliche tipo cementine)


Ingresso/Corridoio – Potremmo valutare di rimuovere la porta che al momento separa il salotto dal resto dell’appartamento. (Pavimenti: come anticipato, parquet laminato su toni chiari).

Cabina armadio/Ripostiglio – Al momento utilizziamo questo spazio come cabina armadio con mensole fino al soffitto per riporre altre cose. Preferiamo mantenere l’idea di una cabina armadio, magari organizzata in un altro modo. Tuttavia, valuteremo anche un utilizzo diverso di questo spazio (a patto che venga comunque previsto un luogo/mobile per i vestiti, ecc.). Abbiamo inoltre due armadi a muro che utilizziamo come ripostigli: uno tra il salotto e la camera da letto e uno angolare tra il bagno e la cucina. La sfida
Ricapitolando, la vostra missione impossibile è quella di aiutarci a ricavare una stanza per i nostri bimbi e, al tempo stesso, guidarci nel trovare un po’ di comfort domestico che aggradi però l’occhio e lo spirito: il tutto sempre tenendo presente che, essendo una sistemazione di passaggio, i costi devono essere contenuti.
