Description

NOLA / Open house

Rather than sticking to the standard resolution of spaces, our attempt in this proposal is to maintain the sense of openness that is evident from the existing layout. Additional functions are introduced into the same space.

The design takes advantage of the 12 feet height of the first level and the fact that the designed space is located on terra firma (first level). An additive / subtractive approach to design is used to create 2 levels on the first level. The lower level would be the bedroom and the upper level would be an office space.

This volume sitting in the open space would allow for maximum light penetration to all the spaces, an important consideration that may not be possible if enclosures for both the spaces are created.

In addition, the staircase connecting the first and the second level has been redesigned and opened up. This creates a more contiguous space and the volume starts reading as one.

This design does involve structural challenges, but in the end would yield a space that is open and flexible.
