This project focuses on a very interesting premise of converting an existing room into a library and sleeping space for an 8-year old child. I’ve approached this project simply by answering the question, “What are the things that come to your mind when you think of a library?”. In my opinion they are:
1. Solid wall(s) of books
2. Floor to ceiling bookshelves
3. Reading nooks or cozy alcoves to curl up with a good book
4. Study desk to jot down notes
5. Brightly coloured accents
The challenge here was to cram in a lot of shelving, a reading alcove, a separate sleeping area and a study desk in this small, brightly lit room. I’ve managed to do that by layering them one above the other, with the reading alcove at the lowest level, a study desk at mid level and sleeping space at the higher level. This results in a simple, uncluttered space which satisfies the dream of every child - to sleep in a bunk bed and to live in a library!
