The brief was clear: propose a solution that enhances the space and the usability of the apartment.
Based on that and inspired by the architectural concept of "free plan", we aimed to create something in which air, light and people can flow seamlessly.
The first thing we did was to identify three main areas: night-day-transition/services. This was the first and somehow the easiest thing to do given the actual layout. We then figured out how to connect these areas in a way that wouldn't block the flows without compromising the privacy.
We created a pivoting area where all the spaces can in some ways relate to, a threshold that one can cross easily and yet a hypothetic line that defines precisely each space: therefore we thought to place the main bathroom at the center of the apartment to serve this purpose.
Moving the bathroom at the center gave us the opportunity to create two corridors.
One, running from the kitchen to the small bedroom, gives access to the bathroom and house a laundry/storage area and can be closed by a floor to ceiling fluted glass sliding doors on each side.
The other, that also serves as a small gallery, gives direct access to the master bedroom with en-suite. The 230cm height door to the master bedroom is also in fluted glass and, just like the others, lets the light into the corridor and partially into the living room.
Space sharing and the interaction between inhabitants and flows, has also informed the choice of placing an opening between the bedrooms, sunken in the full hight/length wardrobe of the master bedroom. This expedient not only allows air and light circulation, but becomes instrumental for the parents in supporting the child when needed, especially in the early stages.
A built-in furniture in the open plan living/kitchen area, that features a slatted pale blue surface and a mirrored plinth, becomes one of the most interesting features of the apartment. It hosts different functions (TV holder, cupboard, bookshelf and pantry). These functions reflect and support the different activities within the space.
Another interesting note, is the alignment of the kitchen cabinets, laundry/storage unit and the small bedroom's wardrobe. The idea behind was to create a continuous perspective line that highlight the concept of the house as whole with no apparent boundaries where everything and everyone is connected and partecipate to a better living experience.
