Description

1. General concept
The basic idea is to create a dynamic environment that can be a product of freshness in the urban environment. It is the creation of a private product which will be part of the public space with a form of a thematic pocket park. This pocket park is inspired by the flea markets/agoras whose history dates back to ancient Italy. They have a human scale which makes them welcoming for the passenger and adaptive to the urban landscape of a city. People will be intrigued to walkthrough this space and get informed about the product.

The name of the brand is proposed to be “Milkiamo” and comes out from the English work “Milk” and the Italian work “amo” which means “I love”.



2. Explanation of function and design
The operating program was divided into two main sections. This of production (stock, production, packaging) and that of sales. The basic design principle was to place these sections opposite and creating between them an elongated public space in the form of a “passerella”. This space is the foundation of the idea as due to its flexible operation it can be a place to sit and enjoy the products that can be consumed, to understand the production process and to do window shopping as if you are on a shopping street. Furthermore it has the flexibility to accommodate different outdoor events.

The commercial section functions as a narrow boundary between the street and the inner "public" space of the “passerella”. It is a strip of shops where someone can buy or take-away products and a protection filter between the street and the production department (so that one can see in depth the production and take a glimpse of the overall concept). The idea is not to create a large single space but smaller spaces with different functions (like kiosks). Inspired by the flea markets that are encountered in Italy. This design complies with the idea of creating a semi-public market that can easily invite passengers to get known with the concept of the product.
The areas of the commercial section are:
-Sales area 1: a space that communicates with the bar and is a seating area where guests can try the available products. In this area there could be vending machines that have packaged products that someone tries at the bar.
-Sales area 2: this area consists of the main diary shop that has a counter-refrigerator from where one can try and buy refrigerator products. This bench could also serve direct passers-by. Shelves with ready-made packaged products (which someone can buy) can be placed around the perimeter.
-Bar: It is placed at the central point of the sales department and connects the two areas above. Its placement works as a space that can serve passers-by (take away), those who choose to sit inside the test-space (sales area 1) or those who choose to sit on the exterior sitting area (exterior cafe).
The spaces are structured in such a way that in summer they can be opened and take the form of an open market with counters. In this way the sales zone would become an even softer boundary between the street and the "semi-public" space of the “passerella”.

The production department is structured with the following functional criterias:
-Direct connection of stock & packaging with external road
-Direct connection stock - production - packaging
-Packaging & production on the inner façade of the “Passarella”, as a side view of the production process
-This section could be more compact but it was chosen to keep a patio for employees either as an outdoor warehouse or as a space that could be a future expansion based on the functional needs.

This creates a public space between production and consumption where there are no customers but visitors who can realize the full idea of the product by a walk-through. It is a semi-private public space that arouses the interest of visitors and invites them to meet a new world.
At this zone it is proposed a pergola which could make this space more comfortable for the guests as it could protect them by sun or by rain.

At last, the auxiliary zone which contains the technical room, wc for visitors, wc for employers and office is placed on the back side and is accessible through a narrow corridor.



3. Materials
For the intervention I propose small containers (24ft). Large ones could also be used at the production area.

Regarding the faces and the management of the openings, there are those:
- keep their sides closed
- join another container side by side.
- have a closed part of 1m at the bottom. (Production bars and counters)
- have a completely open façade (glass façade)

For outdoor interventions are proposed big wooden pots with trees that work as a sitting furniture, too. They can be transported and placed directly to the space.



4. Flexibility and adaptability to the plot and the weather
The complex has the ability to adapt to different plots depending on how many faces can be left free. The facades have the following hierarchy:
-Main façade: Maintaining the basic idea of the “passerella” (entrance from there) and taking into consideration that the loading-unloading area must be in touch with the road this is the main façade of the project.
-Secondary façade: Is the one of the commercial section which works as a soft border with the inner of the project and provides the possibility of passengers to take-away products.
-Auxiliary facades: The rear sides of the project create a compact look where entrances and passages are formed at the gaps between the volumes.

According to these above, the project can be placed like this:
A. Open plot: 4 facades free
B. Corner plot: main & secondary façade free
C. Only one face to the street: main façade free

Obviously the project works better at plots where at least the main and the secondary facade are free. With this way the main façade serves the functionality of the project and gives the main entrance while the secondary façade create an interesting commercial look with the possibility of take-away.

Finally, perimeter narrow corridors have been left so that the composition is centered on the given dimensions. If for functional reasons these corricors are unnecessary they could be removed. This would make it possible to widen the perimeter zone and create a parking space or widen the central catwalk.
