Description

The design of the apartment was inspired by the coastal houses of Santorini, Sicily and the Amalfi Coast. The goal was to create a relaxing environment by using soft colours, traditional elements, as well as elements inspired by the beach.

The colour scheme of the house revolves around the colours white and blue. Parts of the walls are exposed to reveal brick finishes which are then white washed, as inspired the stone architecture of the coastal architecture of the Mediterranean regions. The colour scheme is kept simple but fresh and this language is continued through the selection of soft, pastel colours of the furniture.

The barrel vault ceilings in the main space and bedrooms are also a nod to the cavern like interiors of the houses in Santorini. This creates an ambient of softness, just as the clouds in the horizon as well as the rolling waves of the Amalfi Coast. The ceiling is lowered to the same height of the top door and windows to allow an uninterrupted plane. At night, the ceiling is lighted create a sense of warmth and relaxation in the space. Downlight is used only in practical spaces such as the kitchen and bathrooms.

Moroccan, Arabesque, mosaic, and simple modern tiles are used throughout the apartment, especially in the kitchen and bathrooms to produce a rustic mood in those spaces. Plants are also introduced throughout the apartment to add a layer of tropical Mediterranean environment.

The apartment is divided into two spaces. The first is the caretaker's space, which includes the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. This is where the caretaker can carry out their daily duties without intruding into the private spaces of the owners. The caretaker's space is also located closer to the entrance so they may be easier alerted of any movements in and out of the apartment. The second space is the private spaces of the owners, which includes the living area, bedroom, bathroom and balcony. This allows the owner some privacy and solitude when required.
