Description

The concept behind the project moves from the aim to maintain as much as possible the architectural shape of the existing building. The first project intention is to expand the cinema space to involve the auxiliary rooms (stairs, corridor, entrance, etc.). To obtain this the building envelope is de-composed in surface bands, involving floor, walls and ceilings, that stretch the space across the central wall. The narrow space between the bands become windows letting natural light penetrate the main space. The operation has also the effect to break the space symmetry, perfect in a cinema function, but limiting for an office space composition. Next step is to bring natural light down into the dark space. To get this, the massive central wall becomes a “sun light driver”, a vibrating volume penetrating the building envelope from a top opening: a linear skylight. Elements such as stairs, stage, gallery become a sort of precious “objets trouvès”, a spatial astonishing surprise inside the building envelope. Project elements are all co-functional and co-significant, they are composed to express the maximum out of their shape, while their use could be extremely flexible.
