Briefing

Dear designers,
this Contest is about the smallest Italian movie theatre/restaurant, Cinematocasa. It became famous thanks to the Bim room, that contains barely 15 seats. Cinematocasa is located in a stunning building of the 18th Century (called Cavallerizza di Palazzo Marchese Busacca di Gallidoro) in Maqueda street near to the Teatro Massimo and the Archivio Storico in the city of Palermo.
Fortunately, the Cavallerizza building has been recently restored after it was bombed in 1943 and has now a new life after hosting for years a glassware shop.

In 1724, when Michele Busacca became the Marquiss of Gallidoro, the Cavallerizza building was a place used to host horses inside vaulted tuff caves.

Cinematocasa has been chosen by the Italian Association of Movie Theaters as an excellence of the western Sicily. It’s the only one in Palermo. Now we want to create a nice bistrot and restaurant to serve the number of tourists that every year come in Palermo.

The building consists of 2 different units. At first, we wanted to use only one unit which means to realize the toilets and a small bistrot with 15 seats for breakfast and a light lunch in the Bim room + renew the Cinematocasa room that has 40 seats for dinner.

Anyway, now we want to use also the second unit to realize a professional kitchen, a dressing room, toilets and a warehouse to increase the number of seats in the Bim room.

I personally creates some pieces of furniture for Cinematocasa, I realized the little chairs made of iron and the small tables (40 x 70 cm) that let the diners be close to each other and that at the same time could be put together to form a social table.
I also did the little armchairs that are only 41 cm wide covered in African fabrics used by Ghanaian and Nigerian women – many of which can be found in the nearby neighboured Ballarò - to get married. We covered the pendant lamps with the same upholstery.

Cinematocasa has nearly 50 seats and 50 armchairs used to watch a movie, a play or a concert.
We left 3 rows of original movie theatre chairs in memory of the previous cineclub that was in the building.

In the part that we already renewed we took in consideration the ethnic diversity that characterizes the city centre of Palermo. We would like the remaining part of the building to be in line with the first but we would like it be a tribute to the Seventh Art to the past and present of the Cinema.

Dopo sette anni, Cinematocasa, il più piccolo cineristorante d'Italia, divenuto famoso per la Sala Bim con appena quindici posti in un palazzo del Settecento in via Maqueda, a pochi passi dal Teatro Massimo, nella Cavallerizza di Palazzo Marchese Busacca di Gallidoro, proprio di fronte l’Archivio Storico. Un attento lavoro di ristrutturazione e di recupero del patrimonio artistico ha permesso la rinascita della Cavallerizza, peraltro bombardata nel ’43, facendo tornare agli antichi splendori un luogo dimenticato da anni, occupata nel secolo scorso da una storica vetreria. Già dal 1724, anno in cui Michele Busacca fu investito del titolo di Marchese di Gallidoro, la Cavallerizza accoglieva i cavalli sotto i tetti a volta in conci di tufo, mentre le carrozze attraversavano i grandi archi in pietra del Palazzo per raggiungere piazza Pretoria, sede del Senato Palermitano.
Cinematocasa è stata scelta dall'Unione Italiana Circoli del Cinema, come sala d'eccellenza della Sicilia occidentale, l'unica a Palermo. Adesso è arrivato il momento del bistrot e del ristorante al servizio del club e dei turisti. La struttura è composta da due unità catastali. Inizialmente avevamo pensato di sfruttare solo una unità catastale, realizzando i servizi igienici e un bistrot con una quindicina di posti per la colazione e un pranzo light e poi utilizzare i quaranta posti di Cinematocasa. In seconda battuta abbiamo pensato di utilizzare anche l'altra unità catastale dove realizzare una cucina professionale, lo spogliatoio, i servizi igienici, il magazzino e lasciare così la prima parte completamente libera dai servizi. Ho curato personalmente i dettagli degli arredi di Cinematocasa, realizzando delle poltroncine in ferro con una asola centrale così come i tavolini larghi 40 cm e lunghi 70, per facilitare una intimità tra i due commensali ma contemporaneamente affiancando i tavoli per realizzare quasi un tavolo sociale. Spazi condivisi così come le poltroncine larghe solo 41 cm e rivestite con i tessuti africani con cui le donne ghanesi e nigeriane, così presenti nel mercato adiacente di Ballarò, vanno a sposarsi. Le lampade sospese sono state rivestite dello stesso tessuto. I posti a sedere sono quasi cinquanta così come le poltroncine per assistere a uno spettacolo cinematografico, teatrale o musicale. Sono rimaste le tre file di poltrone da cinema, unico ricordo del cineclub precedente a 15 posti. Nella zona ristrutturata ho strizzato l'occhio alla contaminazione etnica, tenendo conto che il centro storico di Palermo, la quinta città d'Italia, è fortemente caratterizzata da un importante flusso migratorio africano e non solo. La seconda parte potrebbe essere pensata in armonia con la prima ma con un forte rimando alla settima arte. Un omaggio al cinema del passato e del presente.
