Description

The mount of Etna is one of the most significant landmarks of Sicily empowering the landscaping of the island for thousands of years. This has been used as an inspiration to create a subtle design which reflects the simplicity and the glory of the mountain and respects the vernacular architecture. The proposed design follows a simple slim line forming subtle monolithic buildings.

The bungalows are positioned within the proposed site in such a way to allow uninterrupted views towards the mount of Etna. Each bungalow is accessed individually via an organic shape pathway which extends to the other end of the site connecting with the sanitary facilities. Benches, vegetation and concrete bollard lights are organised along this pathway creating opportunities for the residents of the camping site to meet and socialise.

The bungalows vary in size offering from two to six beds. Each unit has a provision for bike storage, indoor and outdoor living areas, sleeping areas and private bathrooms.

The sanitary units are composed by 4 distinguish buildings connected by a timber platform. Sitting areas along with green elements are organised throughout the timber deck. The aim is to create a meeting place in continuity of the pathway connecting both developments.

The materials chosen reflect the simplicity and earthly dimension of the mount of Etna. Polished concrete slabs are proposed throughout with the use of anthracite grey metal cladding in the image of volcanic elements. Also, it is proposed to use timber to all entrance doors and to outdoor pergolas. Poly-carbonate panels are proposed to be used to outdoor covered areas. Windows are double glazed, in anthracite grey colour.

The use of these material, especially the polished concrete floor facilitates the accessibility to all facilities. Both the bungalows and sanitary units have been designed to maximise accessibility for all. Level access is proposed throughout the development.

The architectural design allows for the installation of photo-voltaic and solar panels throughout the development to ensure the sustainability in the long term.

Overall, it is encouraged the use of SIPs panels for the construction.
