First of all, I would like to express my pleasure and joy with the opportunity you gave us to work on this project.
the main idea was to create a modern and welcoming home.
I start my work with demolishing that wall and connect your living room to the kitchen as you asked for, next I create a custom handrail that does two things one to create a zone for that area and two give a visual effect to the whole living room and get you rid of those nasty ones :).
the handrails are 8x4 cm and made of smoked larch (also for under tv board and handrails of kitchen enterance).
under the staircase, i create a multi-purpose closet you can put jackets, shoes, and books into as you need.
the two chalkboards are to created to response for kids safety in both main stairs and those 3steps in kitchen entrance.
ceilings are 15cm downward and used 3000K light for living room and kitchen and 9000K for behind tv.
in the kitchen, I decided to create One-wall format by moving those 60 and 40 cm cabinet unit to the living room this way you will have a much more elegant kitchen with more open space.
the furnitures are Cassina and Knoll products and art work is Adoration by Giuseppe Magni.
