Drastic climate changes in the Anthropocene have caused irregularities in precipitation and water tides. In the distant future, rising waters of the River Irwell will flood large areas of Manchester where homes and infrastructure are currently located. In response to the upcoming conditions, Hydro-pod offers a sustainable solution by producing customised modular dwellings, designed adapt to extreme climatic phenomena such as flash floods.

Pod Customisation
Using a custom made app, users will be able to purchase prefabricated pods that are tailored to meet their individual requirements. Responding to the cultural identity and diversity of the Oxford corridor, the scheme celebrates individuality and freedom of expression as each pod can be customised differently according to user preference. The design of the infrastructure suggests a dynamic environment where spaces for social interaction are established in several pockets throughout the building. The spatial structure of the building is designed to be flexible and mobile.

Flooding Strategy
The project will work as a safety feature during flood periods by chanelling water into the storage tanks located below the pod towers. The tower core where the pods are attached is designed with an air valve that allows the structure to float due to upthrust created by the weight of the displaced water. The pods are prefabricated and can be latched onto the core in order to gain access to essential utilities such as water supply and electricity.
