I found your project really fun and interesting to work with. I uploaded Floor Plan (it's in Requirements) and one Render, to show more precisely my idea.
Elements are put out of center of the room, showing the open space. Colors which are used are white, brown and black/grey. I tried to make it modern and simple at the same time, with being practical, like you mentioned in description. I hope you like this plan!
PS: A place for your cat is of course included!
