The proposal focuses on the division and reconfiguration of an existing garage space into two separate spaces that operate and function individually.
The two areas are divided by a partition wall with a curvature that creates a subtle but strong geometrical rhythm. The wall continues towards the staircase area therefore dividing them into two separate access routes: one that leads to the basement and the other one to the first floor.
The first space consists of a multi-functional area that stretches from the shutter access (Via Milano street) towards the existing courtyard. The space has access to a back room and to a staircase module that goes to the basement level. As per the client’s reference images, this space is designed to be a reception and waiting area. Given the narrow shape of the plan, the reception is placed towards the shutter entrance, blending in with the curved part of the partition wall. Two waiting areas are located on both sides of the reception zone, with a capacity of hosting approximately 8 people simultaneously.
The second space represents a lobby connected to a bathroom as well as the elevators and the stairs leading up to the first floor. The curved wall creates a geometrical twist that creates a larger access area for the staircase. The zone located close to the existing shutter is designed as a lounge area, with a circular bench following the same geometrical language as the division wall.
In terms of materiality, the two spaces should complement each other by using simple and warm materials such as wood, ceramics with pastel colours and concrete.
The final proposal looks at an efficient method of reconfiguring a space and creating two functional areas with different access points, functionality and density. The central element of the design is the curved partition wall, representing an organic insertion that connects and divides the existing ground floor.
