L’altezza è decisamente la specificità di questo appartamento. Tanto è vero che lo stesso committente ha richiesto un progetto che riesca a sfruttarne la potenzialità forzando lo sviluppo verticale al fine di liberare maggiore spazio a quota pavimento. Il tema dell’altezza è quindi diventato l’elemento intorno al quale si è sviluppato il progetto sia dal punto di vista funzionale sia dal punto di vista spaziale ed architettonico.
In tutto l’appartamento, negli ambienti principali così come negli spazi di connettivo, è sempre presente un elemento che esalta tale specificità attraverso la verticalità. Ognuno di questi elementi si incrocia con il suo corrispettivo orizzontale posto ad una quota tale da avere una duplice funzione solo in apparente contraddittorietà. Infatti l’elemento orizzontale se da un lato esalta, per contrasto, la dimensione verticale, dall'altro la mitiga offrendo un orizzonte ad “altezza umana” più riconoscibile e rassicurante. Tutto ciò appare chiaro appena si varca la soglia d’ingresso dove materiali diversi (legno e vetro opaco) o diversamente rifiniti (legno in essenza o laccato bianco) compongono l’elemento “manifesto” chiarendo l’intento alla base del progetto: una specie di grande “T” coricata, sulla quale si appoggia il soffitto ribassato della zona d’ingresso, accompagna da un lato il salto verso il soggiorno, dall'altro quello verso il disimpegno entrambi lasciati a tutta altezza.
Questa specie di gioco ad incrocio continua nel soggiorno fra l’elemento verticale che contiene il frigorifero ad incasso e che scherma parzialmente l’angolo cottura e la fila di mobili pensili, dello stesso materiale, posti lungo tutta la parete; nella camera da letto l’elemento orizzontale diventa un soppalco sopra il quale si è ricavato lo spazio per il letto e sotto il quale si è ricavata una cabina armadio oltre che un armadio vero e proprio, seppur basso, aperto verso la camera; infine nel bagno dove, fra il grigio chiaro del pavimento e il bianco del rivestimento, la verticalità si esplicita attraverso la superficie in legno in essenza delle ante di chiusura del vano lavanderia, a tutta altezza e ricavato in nicchia, che serve anche da ripostiglio e alloggio della caldaia.
Evidentemente è molto difficile trovare sul mercato arredi che abbiano dimensioni tali da sfruttare appieno l’altezza “atipica” dell’appartamento. Ragione per cui sarà inevitabile realizzarne su misura buona parte di quelli fissi. Il progetto trasforma questa necessità in virtù laddove l’uso del legno, per lo più in essenza, diventa l’altro elemento qualificante. La presenza del legno lavorato in pannelli lisci di compensato impiallacciato senza alcuna modanatura o decorazione ma con le sue sole venature e nodosità da sola basta a conferire un particolare equilibrio fra consuetudine domestica e ricercata raffinatezza e a trasmettere calore anche al più minimalista degli ambienti. “Il legno fa calore anche quando non brucia” il che è ancora più importante in questo caso in cui il proprietario, così credo di aver capito, sembra vivere l’appartamento pochi giorni la settimana.
Le pareti bianche e il pavimento in parquet chiaro saranno in grado di esaltare la poca luminosità che l’appartamento, posto al piano rialzato, riceve dall'esterno.
Ovviamente tutti gli elementi fin qui descritti hanno, come si diceva, anche una valenza funzionale la “T” all'ingresso nasconde la struttura in elementi lamellari che sostiene il soppalco, la parete divisoria della camera da letto e l’ampio mezzanino – deposito che copre la zona dell’ingresso e a cui si accede dal bagno; la colonna nel soggiorno, oltre a definire gli ambiti funzionali del soggiorno, ospita il frigorifero fino ad un’altezza di circa due metri e vani contenitori per la restante parte fino al soffitto. Del vano lavanderia-ripostiglio si è già detto. Al soppalco si sale con una scala che parte con una cassapanca. Anche questa con doppia funzionalità: chiusa offre una possibilità di seduta che per la dimensione potrebbe essere una sorta day-bed, aperta da accesso ad contenitore nel quale, per esempio e nella stagione giusta, riporre e riprendere comodamente lo snowboard e relativa attrezzatura. Di fronte alla cassapanca si è lasciata la parete completamente libera, libera di usarla in funzione di eventuali esigenze future (scrivania, divano, libreria...lettino (!)).
La cabina armadio è divisa dalla zona d’ingresso da un’ampia vetrata in vetro temperato opaco. Ciò permette di dare un’impressione di maggiore profondità a chi entra in casa e avere per l’area di ingresso e disimpegno, con la luce dedicata ed appropriata proveniente dalla cabina armadio, un’illuminazione tenue “di cortesia” e diffusa (il vetro opaco funziona appunto da diffusore) al contempo.
Infine il bagno con la doccia “importante” così come richiesto. Il piatto doccia, a filo pavimento se le condizioni lo permettono, ha dimensioni di 70x140 cm per uno spazio totale dedicato di 70x175 cm. Anche nel caso della doccia si è pensato a sfruttare il fattore altezza utilizzando la parte alta come spazio per stendere il bucato grazie ad uno stendi-biancheria elettrico a soffitto (munito pure di ventola per l’asciugatura rapida) che all'occorrenza e col telecomando si abbassa per essere usato per poi rialzarsi, compreso di biancheria, lasciando di nuovo libera la doccia.

The height is definitely the specificity of this apartment. So much so that the same client has requested a project that manages to exploit its potential by forcing vertical development in order to free up more space at floor level. The theme of height has therefore become the element around which the project has developed from functional and architectural points of view.
Throughout the apartment, in the main rooms as well as in the connective spaces, there is always an element that enhances this specificity through verticality. Each of these elements intersects with its horizontal counterpart at a height that has a dual function only in apparent contradiction. In fact, if on the one hand the horizontal element enhances, by contrast, the vertical dimension, on the other it mitigates it by offering a more recognizable and reassuring “human height” horizon. All this becomes clear as soon as the entrance threshold is crossed where different materials (wood and opaque glass) or differently finished (wood in essence or white lacquer) make up the "manifest" element, clarifying the intent behind the project: a species of large lying “T”, on which rests the lowered ceiling of the entrance area, accompanies on the one hand the jump towards the living room, on the other the one towards the disengagement both left at full height.
This sort of crossover game continues in the living room between the vertical element that contains the built-in refrigerator and which partially shields the kitchenette and the row of hanging furniture, of the same material, placed along the entire wall; in the bedroom the horizontal element becomes a loft above which the space for the bed has been obtained and under which a walk-in closet has been obtained as well as a real wardrobe, albeit low, open towards the bedroom; finally in the bathroom where, between the light gray of the floor and the white of the covering, the verticality is expressed through the wood surface in essence of the closing doors of the laundry compartment, full height and carved into a niche, which also serves as a storage room boiler housing.
Obviously it is very difficult to find furniture on the market that is large enough to take full advantage of the "atypical" height of the apartment. Reason why it will be inevitable to make a good part of the fixed ones customized. The project transforms this need into virtue where the use of wood, mostly in essence, becomes the other qualifying element. The presence of wood worked in smooth panels of veneered plywood without any molding or decoration but with its only veining and knotty alone is enough to give a particular balance between domestic habit and refined refinement and to transmit warmth even to the most minimalist of environments. "Wood makes heat even when it doesn't burn" which is even more important in this case where the owner, I think I understand, seems to live the apartment a few days a week.
The white walls and the light parquet floor will be able to enhance the lack of brightness that the apartment, located on the mezzanine floor, receives from the outside.
Obviously all the elements described so far have, as we said, also a functional value. The "T" at the entrance hides the structure in lamellar elements that supports the mezzanine, the dividing wall of the bedroom and the large mezzanine - deposit that covers the entrance area and which is accessed from the bathroom; the column in the living room, in addition to defining the functional areas of the living room, houses the refrigerator up to a height of about two meters and storage compartments for the remaining part up to the ceiling. The laundry room-closet has already been mentioned. Go up to the mezzanine with a ladder that starts with a chest. Also this one with double functionality: closed it offers a possibility of sitting that for the dimension could be a sort of day-bed, open from access to container in which, for example and in the right season, to put back and comfortably take back the snowboard and relative equipment. In front of the chest the wall was left completely free, free to use it according to any future needs (desk, sofa, bookcase ... cot (!)).
The walk-in closet is divided from the entrance area by a large window in opaque tempered glass. This makes it possible to give an impression of greater depth to those who enter the house and to have light “courtesy” and diffused lighting (the glass opaque works precisely from the diffuser) at the same time.
Finally the bathroom with the "important" shower as requested. The shower tray, flush with the floor if conditions permit, has dimensions of 70x140 cm for a total dedicated space of 70x175 cm. Also in the case of the shower, it was thought to take advantage of the height factor by using the upper part as a space to hang out the laundry thanks to an electric clothesline on the ceiling (also equipped with a fan for quick drying) that if necessary and with the remote control it lowers to be used and then rises again, including linen, leaving the shower free again.
