This is an competition project of an hotel site near the center of the capital city of Tirana, Albania. It is situated along one of the main roads of the city, in a quite dense area with mixed functions such as housing, retail, offices, parks etc. There is a small park west of the site, suitable for various recreational activities, and the site is also near the long boulevard along the river of Tirana.
It is a project I have designed with great care and inspiration. The hotel has 100 beds, nearly 60 rooms, a grand restaurant on the first floor, two coffee bars (one on the ground floor which has access to the ground floor garden and the other no the terrace with access to the roof garden) conference rooms for up to 150 people, spa zone, terrace pool, special suits and a great hall of three stories high, that even reaches to the top level.
The design if focused in the contrast of the archaic old and contemporary new styles and colors. The old is symbolized by the roots and grounding of the building with ancient stones and historic mosaics carved and artisanaly crafted to recreate the urban modern metaphor of "Illyrian Tradition" as far as 2000 years ago found in sites around this city. And the new is represented by monoblock structures with high end textures, with differing transparency levels as the day slowly escalates towards the night, by exposing more of the inner life of the building, the darker it gets. This is possible by the white, perforated enveloping membrane of the design, which seems opaque at day and a grill of transparency and light emitting at night. Hope you enjoy it!
