The concept is to create a house complex which exploits to the best the possibilities of the plot for both apartments and at the same time offers privacy at its habitants. However as it is going to be used by two families which are relative I wanted to create some common areas, too.

For the design the principle idea was to place the two apartments at a position that both can take advantage of the sea view (which is considered as the good view) and away from the street for more privacy. Also I designed the garage at a strategical position where it works as an extra border with the street and helps to create a protected common garden.

Afterwards it was estimated the relation between the two apartments in order to have the maximum privacy. So they were placed at 90 degree angle in a way that both apartments can use their exterior space without to disturb the other inhabitants.

Then I moved the private/sleeping area and the more public/living area of each apartment in order to create some private yards which can be useful for the entrance at the apartments and as a veranda for the bedrooms.

Each apartment organizes in a way that the common / living areas exploit to the fullest the length of the façade and extend its space to the exterior living spaces which are covered with a pergola. On the other hand the bedrooms use the private yards (which feel more protected) to connect with the exterior environment.

Between the exterior spaces of these apartments there is a common BBQ/exterior kitchen which is large enough to be used at the same time for both families or separately according to the circumstances.

As for the materials I choose natural materials such as wood and stone in order to create a calm atmosphere. Contemporary materials can be combined with the local stone walls and the timber roof. Light color palette is proposed for the fabrics of the furniture, too.

The shape of the building looks complex at the plan but I chose to create a minimal form and unify all the spaces under a continuous (L shape) roof with skylights.

This proposal creates two apartments with various qualities and with gradation between public and private spaces. Of course sun, ventilation and the view were the key factors during the design process in order to create pleasant spaces.
