The design idea was to practically minimize the changes on the original structure and adds the additional feature to achieve a two units apartment. The proposal was to keep the original stair and integrate it with additional stair up to 2nd floor/ Unit. It is not advisable to put the stair internally as the space for 2nd floor may compromise its value.
In such proposal, the area and feature of 1st and 2nd floor unit will be the same, thus its value in an event the owner wants revenue thru renting such space. To make the proposal like a single structure the stair was concealed by the wall creating an accent wall on the design as the focal point.
