Design Approach

This floor plan proposal was developed with the intention of creating a calm and highly functional retreat while respecting the apartment’s existing technical limitations and compact footprint. The design approach carefully balances spatial efficiency, natural light, minimal demolition work, and realistic plumbing constraints, while still maintaining an ideal relationship between each room.

The apartment is organized through a clear distinction between public and private zones. The master bedroom and children’s studio are positioned together within the quieter sleeping area, directly connected to the bathroom zone, while the living area remains visually open and connected to the terrace. A dedicated night hallway creates a softer transition between these spaces, allowing children to access the bathroom independently without disrupting the parents’ sleeping area.

Given the limited size of the apartment, every furniture selection prioritizes flexibility and functionality. Within the living area, a compact 2-seater Alphabet Sofa by Fritz Hansen is paired with an additional chaise module to create a more relaxed atmosphere without visually overwhelming the room. Between the kitchen and living area, a low-height bookcase acts as both storage and a subtle architectural divider, maintaining openness while gently defining the different functions of the space. The lower section of the bookcase is also designed as concealed storage for bedding, bath linens, and kitchen linens, helping maximize functionality without adding visual clutter.

The dining area adopts a flexible approach through the use of a folding table solution, allowing the apartment to adapt comfortably between everyday use and hosting guests. The proposed IKEA Pintorp table accommodates two people when folded and expands to seat four when fully opened, complemented by stackable chairs and compact stools for easier storage and spatial flexibility.

Within the kitchen, upper cabinets are intentionally minimized to preserve a lighter and less crowded visual atmosphere. One concealed upper cabinet discreetly integrates the boiler unit, allowing the technical requirement to blend seamlessly into the overall kitchen composition while remaining directly connected to the external wall near the balcony.

The children’s studio/bedroom is designed as a compact yet efficient multifunctional space, capable of accommodating a 190 cm bunk bed, integrated drawers beneath the lower bed, a bookshelf, and a compact study desk. Despite its size, the room still benefits from direct natural light, helping maintain a bright and airy atmosphere.

Along the hallway, a built-in wardrobe with a 40 cm depth maximizes storage efficiency through the use of front-facing hanging rails, transforming the circulation space into a functional storage element without compromising movement throughout the apartment.

Inside the master bedroom, the layout is carefully arranged to comply with the required 14 sqm while still incorporating built-in wardrobes and additional concealed storage solutions. The space is designed to feel comfortable, functional, and visually uncluttered despite the apartment’s compact dimensions.

Finally, the bathroom layout was developed to maximize efficiency while minimizing renovation complexity. The WC remains positioned within the existing plumbing zone to simplify construction works, while wall-hung sanitary fixtures create a lighter visual impression and improve the overall sense of spaciousness. A compact vanity with integrated storage accommodates daily amenities, while the shower enclosure is defined with tempered glass to maintain openness and allow natural light to flow throughout the space. The bathroom also benefits from direct ventilation and daylight through the existing window.

Styling Approach

The styling approach embraces a soft contemporary boho aesthetic with subtle rustic warmth, creating an apartment atmosphere that feels inviting, calm, and visually balanced without becoming overly decorative.

Since the apartment has a compact footprint, the material palette was intentionally kept cohesive and low-contrast to avoid a cluttered visual experience while still maintaining warmth and character through layered textures.

Off-white stucco walls create a soft organic backdrop, paired with washed muted green cabinetry, warm oak wood textures, and natural rattan accents seen on the woven pendant lighting and decorative elements. The use of oak veneer flooring further enhances the airy and grounded atmosphere of the space.

Styling elements were carefully curated using woven textures, ceramics, soft fabrics, and minimal boho-inspired accessories to maintain a relaxed and lived-in ambiance without overwhelming the apartment visually.

In the bathroom, warm limestone textures are combined with subtle white tiles to create a comfortable spa-like atmosphere that feels clean, bright, and naturally warm while remaining cohesive with the overall material language of the apartment.
