The church of “Santo Stefano ai Ferri” is located in Tivoli, an important and historical city near Rome. The church has a significant conservative degradation and isn’t currently used, apart from some concerts and lectures.
The project provides the restoration of the building and the creation of a municipal school of music, with an adjacent musictherapy classroom and some apartments for the musicians upstairs.
Over the centuries, the roof of the church has undergone several changes to the current condition, where the original height has varied through the construction of a brick-concrete floor after the bombing of the second world war. It’s, however, still visible a tooth that identifies the original height of the church, the starting point for the project of the new roof. Eliminating the inter-floor placed at the height of 3.7, the church would return to having an uniform interior space. Taking as reference the tooth of masonry present on the counter of the church, it has been supposed the height of this discontinuity as the probable support of the original truss; starting from this tooth is modeled the new ceiling, useful also to ensure good acoustic of the room.
To allow access for the disabled to the structure is designed a semi - underground path exploiting the unused spaces around the undergrond level of the church. In this way it would be possible the access to all areas of the church and to the new services, located outside, along the path.
