Main goal of this project was to incorporate natural materials, bright and natural color palette with blue and navy details and accessories. Having in mind lack of natural light and existing darker floor cover, I proposed light, white furniture and white walls. Big mirror above two armchairs will provide reflection of natural light from windows on the opposite wall. Two light and airy shelving units, behind sofa, will create transparent barrier from the bathroom and bedroom doors, bring intimate atmosphere in the living room and make room for accessories, details, family photos, storage boxes etc. Brown heavy cabinet is important to your family, so I propose not to change anything about it except color. That can be the first of couple easy DIY projects, I hope that the kids will find that interesting, too. I propose "distressed painting technique", white or light blue color. You can find many tutorials on internet. Other DIY projects are making a flowerpot which will create visual unity with the column and separate living area from dinning area, creating a gallery wall with wood and family photos or beach themed photos above the tv unit (which can have a similar effect like mosaic tiles you mentioned, but more personal and unique) and maybe painting dinning chairs with the same technique as brown cabinet. I gave some examples in the project, but also, if you don't find DIY interesting, you can always find similar things to buy. My proposition for windows are roman blinds with blue stripes. They will frame the windows, create more cozy atmosphere and if you hang them high, just a few cm above ceiling, windows are going to visually appear bigger and higher.
Details are one of the most important segments of interior design, so with bright furniture, you have freedom of adding many accessories, blue, navy, white, beige, sea and beach objects, photo frames, boxes, candles, bowls, vases... Plants and flowers are always welcome too.
