Description

Cala Loca
The location of the Cala Loca resort features a beautiful beach front setting, facing south. The enclosed and steep character of the site provides the perfect opportunity to incorporate an architectural design within the landscape itself and take advantage of the orientation and slope. As a result, the key elements of this design are the steps towards the sea.
The structure in itself is clean and crisp in order to highlight the roughness of the surrounding stone walls. The architectural solution provided shows various levels, stepping down towards the beach. Each level houses a specific function, while still capturing views and lights through the south facing openings.

Location plan
Cala Loca is located on a focal point between two accessible routes, the upper vehicular road and the lower pedestrian old route. The lower route between tunnels becomes part of the Cala Loca mezzanine while the upper road provides a connection to Cala Loca through a flight of stairs. Its orientation is North-South.
This level provides accessibility from the promenade and the tunnel. A central bar, market and ice- cream unit is positioned close to the street to allow people to make their purchases easily during their walk. A lift and staircase are located on both sides of the bar to facilitate the circulation of customers and staff and provide a quick connection between levels.
High shelters are positioned throughout the mezzanine to create a shaded area while providing a frame for the views towards the sea.
Area distribution
The overall area of this mezzanine is 239.5 m2
Furnishing
11 benches
22 tables
78 chairs

This level is accessible through the exterior staircase and the internal lift providing a vertical connection between levels. The main function of this level is the restaurant and its facilities.
The restaurant has a capacity to host almost 80 people that can have lunch or dinner in the internal spaces, the courtyards or the small balcony facing the sea. The kitchen has a transparent character and is located in the heart of the restaurant to allow people to see the culinary process. The lift is located adjacent to the kitchen so food can be transported easily to the snack bar. Toilets, storage areas and disability restrooms are also positioned at the back wall. A public staircase and recreational area follows the restaurant and connects the building to the beach. The area below the staircase is used for changing rooms. They can be accessed from the beach through a corridor with a mesh ceiling that allows natural light to penetrate the area.

Area distribution
The overall area of the restaurant is 299 m2 .
The indoor area is 211 m2 where the kitchen occupies 22 m2 and the dining area is 189 m2. The outdoor dining area is 88 m2 .
The public staircase and recreational area is 29 m2.
45 tables
80 chairs

This is the final level that provides a gate between the beach and the resort. The changing facilities are located below a public staircase to provide a more private area for people wanting to change into their clothes. This area is lit by natural light penetrating a mesh ceiling. The mesh can be also used by people on the upper level as it is strong enough to hold people walking on it. The public staircase as well can be used as a resting space to sit on, sunbathe and have a drink in the sun.

The staircase that provides a connection between the up¬per and lower level of the hill requires special attention. The pictures in the middle show precedents that have been used to dictate an intervention on this staircase. The red color shown in the first image is achievable through the usage of stained concrete available at https://www.concretenet¬work.com/stained-concrete/

An important part of the concept of this design is accessibility. The staircase connecting the upper level of the hill with the resort becomes a promenade in itself and allows the resort to be accessible on multiple levels. As such this staircase becomes a key element that requires a special intervention. Several platforms and terraces are distributed throughout its length to allow people to stop and take a break. The terraces are both part of the flight of stairs or projected towards the sea. The views provided by this staircase both during the day and during the night through the artificial lighting can create a 360 impact on tourists.
